The Historically Challenged Sixth Grade Teachers
Book: Walt Disney by Barbara Kramer
Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He had four older brothers, and one younger sister. At the age of four, the Disney family moved to Missouri, USA. They lived on a farm close to the town of Marceline. Everyone in the Disney family helped work on the farm. Walt Disney helped care for the pigs, ducks, cows, and chickens. He really liked spending time with the animals and drawing pictures of them. Since Disney didn’t have a lot of art supplies, he sketched on almost anything he could find: even toilet paper! Sadly, Walt’s father thought drawing was a waste of time, but his brother Roy encouraged Disney. When Disney turned nine, his father sold the farm. Disney sobbed as he watched the animals being led away by new owners. His love of animals and nature had begun on that farm.
At the age of 15, Walt Disney got a summer job selling newspapers, sodas and snacks to passengers on the trains. Disney liked this job a lot since he liked riding the train and seeing new places. When Disney was 16, Europe’s World War I was commencing. Disney wanted to do his part. He left school and signed up for the Red Cross to drive an ambulance. When Disney returned to the United States, he moved back to Kansas City. He then got a job in a company that makes short films. There, Walt Disney learned about animation. In 1992, Disney left the company and started his own one, called Laugh-O-gram films. He made short films that took well known fairy tales and made them funny. Disney worked hard, but he didn’t raise enough money to pay all his bills, so he had to close the company. Disney went to Hollywood, California and hoped to work at a movie studio. Unfortunately, no one hired him, so Disney started drawing cartoons again. Disney’s brother Roy was living in California too, so the two brothers teamed up and started a company named Disney Brothers Studios. Disney continued to work on the short series which he started in Kansas City. It was called the Alice Comedies, which became the story Alice in Wonderland that we all know by heart. As the people started liking the Alice Comedies more, Disney hired more people, which one of them was named Lillian Bounds. They soon started dating and got married in 1925. Soon, the Alice Comedies got older, so the buyer of Disney’s cartoons asked him to make a new character. And that’s how Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. The buyer soon realised he could make characters too, so he hired all of Disney’s staff. Disney was really sad, but he then created a new character: Mortimer Mouse. Lillian didn’t like the name, so they both agreed on Mickey Mouse.
Disney was famous for creating cartoon characters like Alice, Oswald and Mickey. He never gave up on what he was doing no matter what failures he faced. Disney was so incredible he became my generation’s childhood. No matter through TV, stores, cartoons, toys, or even milk bottles, everyone from my generation has had at least one of Disney’s products. Disneyland became every child’s happy memories, and I believe that 20 years from now, Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, Belle, and many others, will still hold a special place in our hearts. Walt Disney has never stopped dreaming, and even now, his dreams still live on.

She grew up around books, from going to the nearby library to her room at home. From an early age, Joanne had the passion to be a writer. She often wrote little short stories on paper. At the age of six she wrote a book about a rabbit titled “Rabbits”. After her mother praised her efforts, Joanne replied ‘well get it published then.’ She still admits it was a bit of an odd thing for a child of six to think. Book name:Robert Downey Jr The Fall and Rise of the Comeback Kid Author:Ben Falk
‘When my dad and I would do drugs together, it was like him trying to express his
love for me in the only way he knew how.’ (1988)
Sadly, perhaps the most infamous fact about Robert Downey Sr is not related to
his celebrated, cult filmography. Rather, it is that barely a year after Jr’s wrathful
deity experience, at the age of eight, Downey Sr gave Junior his first marijuana joint.
It was 1973, hippies were all around and he believed he was a hypocrite for not
sharing something he did readily. Little did he know how important that spliff
would turn out to be. It – and the addictions that followed – almost destroyed his
son.
There were always drugs in the Downey household. Robert Jr even called it a
‘staple in life’. Though he essentially loved his family, his father comes across as a
patriarch, a travelling showman, a man who stirred his tea with the handle of a
hammer and dominated the room, but at the same time was an addict, a self-
absorbed agitprop stoner more concerned with creative endeavours than being a
proper, responsible parent.
Nevertheless, while life in the Downey household was peculiar, it was enter-
taining. Writers, poets and painters, as well as people like counter-culture activist
Abbie Hoffman, floated through on a regular basis. Films were projected on a
white sheet in the sitting room. Downey Sr would pretend to be Sturges the family
dog and go into long monologues about what was inside his head. Junior remem-
bers wandering around Greenwich Village on his father’s shoulders, taking in the
life around them. They would go to the movies and often leave after the opening
credits, because Downey Sr didn’t think much of what he was seeing. The arts were
encouraged and by the age of seven Junior was already playing jazz tunes on the piano at home.
One thing the Downeys did do was travel. Robert Jr said that every time he came
home and told his father he had made a new friend, Dad would tell the family to
pack their bags. They flitted between New York, Woodstock, Connecticut and Cali-
fornia. It played havoc with Downey Jr’s schooling, moving between educational
establishments and missing chunks of term time. It led to feelings of inadequacy
on Junior’s part and a desire to cover up his perceived scholastic shortcomings by
being the centre of attention. There was even a brief sojourn in London just after
Putney Swope came out, picked apparently because Downey Sr thought they need-
ed to go somewhere more boring than New York. Robert Jr did find it dull, telling
interviewers he attended Perry House School in – as far as he remembers –
Chelsea, where he was encouraged to learn ballet. Further research does not un-
earth any school remotely resembling Perry House in the West London area, but
wherever it was, he does recall standing in the corner of the room for most of his
lessons. He told the Biography Channel, the teachers were to blame, criticising his
American accent and grammar and punishing him unnecessarily. ‘[They] would
say, ‘Robert?’ and I’d say, “What?”. Then they’d say, “Don’t say what, say excuse
me.” And I’d say, “Huh?” However brief, I didn’t enjoy England’s education sys-
tem. The teachers seemed awfully uptight.’
The family returned to America and older sister Allyson was sent to boarding
school while Robert remained at home. While in Connecticut in 1973, Robert made
friends with a young man called Richard Hall, who later became the musician
Moby. Hall described them as best friends, adding, ‘Parents used to smoke pot to-
gether. Haven’t seen him since.’ Downey Sr directed a live television production of
playwright David Rabe’s Sticks And Bones for CBS, for which the channel was un-
able to sell any advertising due to its anti-war leanings. Then in 1975 Moment to Moment was released – a scattergun effort, almost a series of sketches, written by
Elsie (credited as L. C. Downey) and her husband and starring Leonard Buschel.
‘Mediocrity is my biggest fear’ (1989)
Perhaps Robert’s attitude was a reaction to his home life, perhaps it was merely a
confidence instilled through artistic encouragement, though most amateur psy-
chologists would say acting up outside the home is a sure sign something’s going
wrong within it. His parents had been together for fifteen years when things fell
apart. They were fighting a lot. Robert remembers an incident in a hotel room when
his father threw a milkshake and it stuck to the ceiling. As the young man recalled
it, the globules of ice cream slowly dried to form what looked like a brown nipple
above his head. The fury with which the milkshake had been hurled, almost as if it
was some kind of weapon, stuck with him. He later admitted he used the image to
tap into feelings of anger and sadness when acting.
By his own admission, Downey Sr was struggling with drugs. ‘In the 1970s, I
was a mess . . . it was a disaster,’ he told Postscript. ‘Coke is such a waste of time. A
total waste of time.’ He was barely working. There were little bits here and there,
writing for The Gong Show Movie (1980) and developing an uncompleted film
called Jive. But something had given. ‘The first thing you gotta have if you are going
to make movies this way is a good old lady, or it’s impossible,’ he explained to
writer Joseph Gelmis. Elsie had got a lot out of the relationship, but put up with a
lot. They had often borrowed money, banking on the fact Downey Sr would get an-
other job and his salary would be able to pay off the debt. The electricity and tele-
phone were cut off a number of times. Both parents were increasingly hands-off.
Downey Jr remembers visting his sister in Vermont by himself at the age of just
thirteen.
‘Robert Downey Jr is a genius.’ It’s a phrase I came across a lot during my research
for this book. Most people were referring to his acting across more than 50 films
and television shows. Others were talking about his singing, or his piano playing,
or his poetry. Some even mentioned it in conjunction with his intellect, though
while the following story will prove him to be an immensely intelligent individual, I
have found no official certification to that end.
Having lived and worked in Hollywood myself, I can attest to the fact the word
‘genius’ is one that’s bandied around a great deal in showbiz circles. Not just
about Kubrick or Brando, but about the guy who came up with the marketing cam-
paign for Transformers, or the Beverly Hills orthopaedist who does all the A-list
stars. In other words, its frequent usage often renders it meaningless. As a cynical
entertainment hack with more than a decade in the (posh hotel) trenches, the mere
mention of the term immediately sends my hackles rocketing skywards.
But you know, having spent more time than one man is supposed to spend
studying another man if he doesn’t plan to ask him out on a date, the whole genius
thing doesn’t seem so farfetched when you’re talking about Robert Downey Jr. To
watch his transformation into a vivacious yuppie-turned-pathetic addict in Less
Than Zero, his Oscar-nominated performance as Charlie Chaplin or more recently
his laconic, charismatic turn as an industrialist-cum-superhero in Iron Man, it’s no
surprise that he’s frequently tapped to play the more highly evolved on-screen char-
acters.
Robert chose not to participate in this book. He was scheduled to write his own
autobiography in 2006, even took the advance, but returned it two years later when
his comic book caper became an international blockbuster and set his career onto an even more stratospheric path.
It makes sense, considering a great many young viewers of Iron Man don’t know
Robert’s history – his peculiar upbringing, his struggle with drink and drugs, his
tabloid-friendly tussles with the law and his trail of great performances in not-so-
great films.

Every Batman story is marked with the words “Batman created by Bob Kane.” But that isn’t the whole truth. A struggling writer named Bill Finger was involved from the beginning.
Bill Finger was born in Denver, Colorado in 1914 to a Jewish family. He was raised along with his sisters, Emily and Gilda. The family moved to The Bronx, New York City, where during the Great Depression Louis Finger was forced to close his tailor shop. He dreamed up Batman’s haunting origins and his colorful nemeses. It was only after his death that fans went to bat for Bill, calling for acknowledgment that he was co-creator of Batman. In 1985, DC Comics named Finger as one of the honorees in the company’s 50th-anniversary publication Fifty Who Made DC Great. In his honor, Comic-Con International established in 2005 the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing, which is given annually to “two recipients — one living and one deceased — who have produced a significant body of work in the comics field. Book: A Picture Book of Anne Frank by David A. Adler
Anne was from a Jewish family on June 12,1929. Her mother was named Edith Frank, and her father was named Otto Frank. He was a German army officer in world war 1. Anne also had an older sister named Margot. Germany has been in a troubled time when Anne was born. Adolf Hitler blamed all of their problems on Jews, and, unfortunately, people believed in his persuasive yet misleading speeches. Anne and her family, who was Jewish, felt that it was no longer safe to stay where they’ve lived all their lives. They decided to move to Holland. The first few years was peaceful. Anne studied in a school. One day, the class were asked to write plays. Anne had lots of ideas, and was given the best parts for her lively personality. She dreamed of being a writer or movie star. Sadly, their safety was only temporary. During 1940, the Germans invaded Holland. The Jews were forced to wear yellow stars on their clothing, so they would be easily identified as Jews. They were slipped out of all their rightly privileges, such as going to the parks, movies, riding trains, cars, or even bicycles. Anne was forced out of her old school to enter a Jewish secondary school. On her 13th birthday, Anne received a diary, which was how we knew of her life. She named it Kitty.
On July 5, 1942, Margot was ordered to be sent to a labour camp. Their family refused to let her go, as it was common knowledge that Jews in labour camps were tortured, herded around and killed. Otto, Anne’s father, suggested they go into hiding at the floor on top of his workplace. They brought all their clothes, but as it would be obvious they were trying to hide if they bring luggage, they wore all their clothes. The family shared the floor with a few others who were also hiding from the Nazi. A movable bookcase was bought to conceal the staircase leading to their apartment. They lived there for more than two years. At first, Anne found the hideout fun. “It’s like being on vacation in a very peculiar house.” She wrote on her diary. After some time though, Anne no longer felt that way. The others often bickered, the food was the same each and everyday, the sounds of sires and large rats each night made Anne miserable. They can’t even talk, they can only whisper. Anne longed to talk, for freedom and for friends. Her only comfort was Peter, a boy who was sharing the apartment with Anne, whom she had came to love. Alas, she knew she was lucky. Thousands upon thousands of Jews were abused and slaughtered each day. On the middle of 1944, the Germans were losing. The hideaways allowed themselves to hope. Maybe they would finally be saved! Sadly, on August 4, 1944, the Nazi discovered their hiding spot, and they were bought to camp. Otto, knowing it was likely they would be separated, gave them an address to go to after the war is over. At the camp, some Jews were selected to die, while others, like Anne, were shaved and forced to work. However, the harsh weather, the lack of food and the merciless beatings will also bring death. Anne was still sweet and lively, according to a woman who was in the same camp with her. Margot died during the late February, and Anne followed her during early March. She was only fifteen when she passed away. It all seemed like a cruel joke for the war to end and the prisoners released just weeks after their deaths. Out of all the people in the apartment, only Otto made it out alive.
Anne’s diary was published in 1947. Since then, it had been transcript in fifty different languages. People learned from her diary the horrors of war, the suffering many had endured, and tragedy that had started from misled hatred. I find Anne really inspiring. She was sweet and creative. Her whole life had been one tragedy after another, but still she continued to hope. Even when she was close to death’s door, Anne still radiate life, spreading positivity among the people around her. In death, Anne still continued influencing people with her story. I’m sure her diary had gave hope to many in despair when they saw her reaction to the horrors she faced. Goodbye, Anne Frank, and may your spirit be passed on.

Book: Einstein:His Life and Universe
Author: Walter Isaacson
Dear Mrs.Poon,
Albert Einstein was born in 1879 in Ulm. When he was small, he was slow in learning how to talk. Whenever he had something to say, he would try it out on himself, whispering it softly until it sounded good enough to pronounce aloud. His slow development was combined with a cheeky rebelliousness toward authority, which led one schoolmaster to send him packing and another to amuse history by declaring that he would never amount to much. These traits made Albert Einstein the patron saint of distracted school kids everywhere. But they also helped to make him, or so he later surmised, the most creative scientific genius of modern times.
The Zurich Polytechnic was mainly a teachers’ and technical college when 17-year-old Albert Einstein enrolled in October 1896. Einstein was one of eleven freshmen enrolled in the section that provided training “for specialized teachers in mathematics and physics. Einstein wanted to show that, in the jangled world of physics at the turn of the century, this insouciant ability to tune out conventional wisdom was not the worst fault to have.
Albert Einstein mainly became famous for his “Special Theory of Relativity” which included the formula ‘E = mc 2’. He also earned acclaim from his Nobel Prize, won for his work on the photoelectric. He is still important because he explains why electrons in a metal are emitted or ejected because of incident light.

Book: Becoming Me
Author: Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama, born on 17th of January, 1964 , is a lawyer and the author of her own autobiography, “ Becoming Michelle Obama”. She is married to the former president of the United States, Barack Obama. Born in Chicago as a black , her childhood life was never easy. Michelle and her family were very poor, so they needed to share an apartment with her aunt, Robbie. Aunt Robbie and her husband lived on the first floor and Michelle’s family squeezed in the tiny second floor. Her father was a worker, and her mother stayed home to take care of Michelle and her brother, Craig. Even when she was very young, Michelle knew just because of her skin color, her family needed to bear the discrimination of the white people. Michelle had thought about these problems and she had the decision that she had enough of the discrimination between colored people. Michelle knew that if she wanted to change this situation she had to work hard to win the respect of everyone.
In her autobiography, Michelle wrote that once when she was young a lady teacher asked the children in Michelle’s class to spell and read out the colors she held up in her card. When it’s Michelle’s turn, Michelle didn’t know why she stuck at “ white” while she could read the other color words perfectly. Her mouth wasn’t working and her mind was searching frantically for the sound “ whh-haa”. The teacher told her to sit down, and Michelle’s mind could not print more clearly with the word “ white” while she stared with jealousy at the other two kids who were the best in class she was determined to surpass, as the teacher gave them a golden star badge prize for they read out the color words all correctly. The next day, Michelle demanded the teacher to let her read the color words again. At first, the teacher was about to refuse Michelle, but she felt firmness in Michelle. At last, the teacher had no choice but to allow Michelle to read the color words again. As the day was over, Michelle Robinson wore a golden star on her chest proudly as she started to walk home.
As Michelle grew up, without her parents forcing her to study, Craig and Michelle always had a good time management with their studying and free time. Their parents will often answer their doubts, no matter if it’s silly or serious. Sometimes Michelle or Craig would discuss with them the problems for hours. Until Michelle went to Princeton University, she never left her parents before. The environment, or the students in the school, Princeton University was a whole new world to her. Michelle wrote in her book that she was very glad to attend Princeton even though it meant leaving her parents. After she graduated, she went to Harvard University to study law. Michelle did not forget the goal she set for herself when she was small. She did not like the discrimination got more deterioration everyday. I think that’s the main reason why she wants to attend law school. She thinks everyone’s equal, no one should look down at anyone because of their skin color.
Michelle’s life with Barack Obama and their two daughters Maria and Sasha were perfectly normal like any Americans until Barack declared he wanted to compete for the President of the U.S.A. The competition was not easy. The moment when the host announced Barack Obama really won the competition with more votes, everyone’s hysterical, even their component congratulated and celebrated with the family. In her book, Michelle wrote from that moment, her life was changed. When the President needed to go out, there were cars and agents escorting to their destination. Michelle was terribly worried if her daughters could adapt to this life. There are always journalists following the two girls. On the First Lady, Michelle did everything she was responsible for. She vigorously promoted the importance of education for children. She was often graciously invited to schools to give speeches, which she was really pleased , where she would often express her opinions about what she thought was not fair since she was young. Students all love her dearly. Michelle also invited children and their parents to the White House to play, where she forgot who she was, and enjoy the accompaniment of the children. Michelle was grateful for her strive and her parents’ support, which led her to Michelle Obama today.

Steven Paul Jobs was born in San Francisco, February 24, 1955. As a boy, Jobs spent a lot of time looking at machines with his friends. He was good at learning how they worked. He always liked taking things apart to see what was inside them,. He and his friends would change clocks and radios and other things to change the way they worked. He did this as much as he could.
Steve moved away from his mom and dad to go to collegewhen he was done with high school. The college he went to cost a lot of money, and his mom and dad did not have much. Since his family was poor and could not pay for the school, Steve dropped out after half a year. But that did not mean that he stopped learning. He knew how important it was to keep learning new things.
Even though he dropped out of school, he still kept going the classes. He went to as many class as he could. His parents did not know that he had stopped paying for school at firsty. He thought it would make them said if they knew.
He Learned a lot in those days. He later told people that what he leaned back then was important for what he did afterwards. He was very poor when he did this though. He had to sell cans for food too. He did not want his parents to know that he stopped paying for school.
Even though Steve Jobs never finished school, he was very smartand knew about a lot of things. by this time , many of his friends had jobs, and they helped him look for work. Soon, because he was good with computers, he got a job working for Atari, whihc was an old computer company. My dad said Atari was 1st generation of TV games and he played that before.
Many people did not like him there. He was still having problems getting along with people, just like he did when he was young in school (like Me?!) The people he worked with knew that he was smart, but they thought that he liked to show off too much. His boss let him keep working there because Steve he knew how to solve problems ythatg other did not.
In 1976, when Jobs was just 21, he and Wozniak started Apple Computer in the Jobs’ family garage.
His innovations and designs made him famous, Like “Apple 1” in 1976, iMac, introduced in 1998. and its innovative design was directly the result of Jobs’s return to Apple, iTunes, is a media player, media library, online radio broadcaster, and mobile device management application developed by Apple. iPod was released October 23, 2001. iPhone at MacWorld Conference & Expoon on January 9, 2007. And iPad was released on April 3, 2010
“But it’s not a faith in technology. It’s faith in people,” he said.
“Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have faith in people, that they’re basically good and smart — and if you give them tools, they’ll do wonderful things with them,” he said. “Tools are just tools. They either work, or they don’t work.”
In a 1994, the Apple co-founder sat down for an interview with Rolling Stone. At the time, Jobs was at one of the lowest points of his career; he had long ago been booted from Apple, and the personal computer revolution seemed to be dimming. And yet, when asked if he still believed in the limitless potential of technology, Jobs answered yes.
Here’s how Jobs’ put his “faith in people” into practice:
1. He hired the right people and trusted them to perform
2. He delivered his demand for excellence in a inspiring way
3. He taught them about humility
4. He taught them to focus
5. He engaged face-to-face
It’s been nine years since Steve Jobs passed away on Oct. 5, 2011, but his lessons about life, work and success still live on today.

Anne Frank was a Jew, and at that time, the Germans hated the Jews and forced them into Concentration Camp and gassed them to death. Jews were treated very badly, for example, they were forced to walk by foot in the burning sun. Jews were also restrained from leaving their house after 5pm. There were many more of these inhuman and cruel rules.
On Anne’s 13th birthday, she received a diary as a present. As she couldn’t tell anyone everything, she treated her diary as her best friend and named it Kitty. One day, Anne’s family received a notice from the German army that Anne’s elder sister Margot would be taken away from them and sent to prison or attend concentration camp.
Anne’s Family decided to hide in Anne’s Dad office. In the office, there was a secret annex and it was like a small house but with very little windows. Anne’s family and the Dan Vaan family, another Jews family hiding away from the Germans, stayed underground for two years and food was provided by their friends Bep and Miep .
During those two years they hid themselves and were scared everytime they heard gun shot sounds or when they heard any footstep sounds. In the two years, Anne fell in love with Peter Da Vann. They were a perfect couple. Whenever they heard that a few German generals were dead, it was a happy news for them. But that happiness did not last long. In 1944, they were caught and everyone hiding in the secret annex were sent to the concentration camp and died other than Anne’s father, Otto Frank, who were able to survive through the camp.
It shocked me and made me feel lucky to live in a proper house, get to communicate with friends, and breath in fresh air everyday.

He was banned from boxing and his title was taken away from him. Muhammad didn’t feel guilty. As other heavyweight boxers won the championship , Muhammad insisted that the title was still his until someone beated him in the ring. Just before Muhammad went into jail, the Supreme Court , the highest court in the land recognized Muhammad’s devotion to his faith and ruled that he had been treated unfairly. So Muhammad did not have to pay a fine or go to jail. Muhammad was nearly 29 years old when he returned boxing. Einstein attended elementary school at the Luitpold Gymnasium in Munich. However, he felt alienated there and struggled at learning He also had what were considered speech challenges.
Towards the end of the 1880s, Max Talmud, a Polish medical student who sometimes dined with the Einstein family, became an informal tutor to young Einstein. Talmud had introduced his pupil to a children’s science text that inspired Einstein to dream about the nature of light. Einstein was very interested. So,during his teens, Einstein penned what would be seen as his first major paper, “The Investigation of the State of Aether in Magnetic Fields.”
In 1905—seen by many as a “miracle year” for the theorist—Einstein had four papers published in the Annalen der Physik, one of the best-known physics journals of the era. Two focused on the photoelectric effect and Brownian motion. The two others, which outlined E=MC2 and the special theory of relativity, were defining for Einstein’s career and the course of the study of physics.

Her mother, Kate Adams, was in charge of taking care of the large number of houses and property that the Keller family owned. Helen also had a half-sibling, from her mother’s previous marrige. For the first year and a half of her life, she was a completely healthy baby. Then when she was 19 months old, she got seriously ill. The virus that made Helen sick gave her very high fever. For a few days, her forehead was almost too hot to touch. Finally, the fever broke, but her mother was still worried. Helen did not respond to noises or to anything that moved in front of her face. After a while, Captain Keller and Kate had to face the truth: their daughter was deaf and blind. All of the best doctors couldn’t figure out what made Helen sick at the first place. They said Helen had brain fever, but modern doctorsnthink Helen might havd had meningitis, a virus that infects the sipnal fluid that goes to the brain. As Helen grew up,she could still walk and run. She used her hands and finguers to understand everything around her. No one in the family knew how to communicate with her, and she would often get upset because she couldn’t communicate with anyone. Whenever she got upset, she would throw tantrums, acting wild and breaking things. Her parents were finding ways to make her act better, or else she would be sent away.
Helen’s parents found a teacher from The Perkins Institute, Anne Sullivan. Helen and Anne didn’t get along very well when they first met. Anne will spell out words on Helen’s palm, to try to let her understand what everything meant around her. After weeks and weeks of trying, Helen finally knew what Anne was doing. Once, Anne brought Helen to a water pump, then let the cold water go through Helen’s hand. At the same time, she kept spelling the word water over and over again in Helen’s palm. It was at this moment, Helen finally understood what was going through her hand, WATER! She was excited to learn everything around her, she touched Anne, she touched the pump, she grabbed the dirt, she wanted to know more about the world around her. She learned the whole alphabet, and over 2 dozen words in a day.
She was very young when she got help, which helped her a lot on her education. She went to college and became the first deaf-blind person to graduate college.
Michael Anagnos wanted to make everyone know about Helen and Anne. He wrote about students and teachers as if they were doingimpossible things, and made Helen seem like a child with superhuman abilities. She found out another world around her, and went from a wild little girl to a well educationed lady. Her persistance towards her life challenges are an insparational to everyone all around the world. Her curiosity let her learn more about life and appreciate it instead of giving up on it. I look up to her because her life journey is extremely inspirational, and her example on persistance is worth learning from.

His teacher said he could not learn. So, after only three months of school, his mother decided to teach him at home. Learning from his mother was fun. She taught Thomas to read. When he was ten, he got a book of science experiments. He tried every one of them in the lab he built in the family’s basement.
Thomas was only 12 when he started working his first job. He sold newspapers and snacks to people on a train. At the train station, Thomas liked to hangout with the telegraph operators. They sent messages to other train stations. Watching them, Thomas knew what he wanted to do next. He would learn to be a telephone operator.
Thomas began to work as a telegraph operator when he was 16. He liked to work all night. During the day, he worked on his inventions. He got his first patent in 1869. It was for a vote counting machine to be used by legislators in making law. But no one wanted to buy it. Thomas did not give up. He worked on other inventions, such as ways to make the telegraph work better. Thomas was so busy working, he did not have time to think about getting married. Then in 1871, when he was 24, he met an 16 year old Mary Stilwell. He liked her right away, and they were married a few months later on Christmas Day. Thomas and Mary had three children. Thomas loved his family, but he did not spend much time with them. He was always busy working. In 1871, he opened a lab in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Then he often worked all day and into the night. When he got tired, he took a nap on a lab table. First, he made his phonograph. This invention made Thomas Edison famous. People called him “The wizard of Menlo park.” Next he made the light bulb. It took Thomas Edison four years to invent the lightbulb. He was granted a patent for his own improved lightbulb in 1879. He began to manufacture and market it for widespread use. In January 1880, Edison set out to develop a company that would deliver the electricity to power and light the cities of the world. Thomas Edison was not only an inventor. He had hearing problems. But, he still didn’t give up. He can cross through all those obstacles and successfully invented the best light bulb (in that time). He once said ,”Actually, deaf is a good thing. It can help me concentrate on my work!”

Mother Teresa
Book: Who was Mother Teresa? By Jim Gigliotti
Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the 20th Century’s greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.Mother Teresa was born on the 26th of August, 1910, in the city of Skopje, which is now the capital city of Macedonia, just north of Greece. Her birth name was Agnes Bojaxhiu. Her mother and father were Nikola and Drana Bojaxhiu. Agnes had a sister, and a brother. Agnes’s father (Nikola Bojaxhiu) was an important man in Skopje. He owned part of a construction company that built the city’s first theater. He was also a member of the town councilHe owned a lot of business and traveled a lot for work. Agnes missed him when he was gone, but was always excited for the stories and surprises he brought back. When she was young, Agnes often sat at the dinner table and listened to her father tell stories about his travels, strangers came to the table sometimes too. Agnes later discovered that the visitors were the poorest people in Skopje, and had come to get a meal, or have a place to sleep. Agnes learned from her parents to help the needy, her mother always cooked and cleaned for the poor while her father was away on business. As a Catholic Agnes was christian, but Skopje was home to Jews and Muslims too. She learned to respect all religions and to recognize that all people were children of God.
Agnes grew up in the same street as the Church of Sacred Heart. Religion was an important part in Agnes’s childhood. She and her sister sang at the church choir. Her family prayed together every night. Agnes first attended school at Sacred Hearts, and attended different public schools later on. Although girls that time were not always sent to school, Agnes took her studies very seriously. Even though she suffered from malaria and whooping cough as a youngster, she remembered her childhood fondly. When Agnes was only eight years old, her father died. Her life instantly shattered. Her father had gone to a political meeting and when he returned after several days, he was very sick. He died the next day, he had been healthy before traveling so Drana suspected he had been poisoned by political enemies. Drana became sad she was too upset to work, and was only left with the house in which her family lived. Without any income, the family struggled. So in her childhood, Agnes experienced both having plenty and little. Soon, her mother recovered from her grief, she started an embroidery business and was soon able to provide for the family and still help others. Agnes sometimes came home from school and found hungry strangers sharing her family’s meal. Every year, Agnes and her family went to the shrine of the Lady of Letnice, they believed it was good for her physical and spiritual health. Agnes felt that when she was there, God was calling her to a spiritual life.
Six years later, in 1928, an 18-year-old Agnes decided to become a nun and set off for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. It was there that she took the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.Sister Mary Teresa traveled on to Darjeeling, India, for the novitiate period; in May 1931, she made her First Profession of Vows. She was sent to Calcutta, where she was assigned to teach at Saint Mary’s High School for Girls, a school run by the Loreto Sisters and dedicated to teaching girls from the city’s poorest Bengali families. Sister Teresa learned to speak both Bengali and Hindi fluently as she taught geography and history and dedicated herself to alleviating the girls’ poverty through education.Although Teresa enjoyed teaching at the school, she was increasingly disturbed by the poverty surrounding her.On September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa experienced a second calling, the “call within a call” that would forever transform her life. She was riding in a train from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills for a retreat when she said Christ spoke to her and told her to abandon teaching to work in the slums of Calcutta aiding the city’s poorest and sickest people. She began missionary work with the poor in 1948,replacing her traditional Loreto habit with a simple, white cotton sari with a blue border.Teresa adopted Indian citizenship, spent several months in Patna to receive basic medical training at Holy Family Hospital and ventured into the slums. She founded a school in Motijhil, Kolkata, before she began tending to the poor and hungry. At the beginning of 1949 Teresa was joined in her effort by a group of young women, and she laid the foundation for a new religious community helping the “poorest among the poor”. On 7 October 1950, Teresa received Vatican permission for the diocesan congregation, which would become the Missionaries of Charity. In her words, it would care for “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone”.As the ranks of her congregation swelled and donations poured in from around India and across the globe, the scope of Mother Teresa’s charitable activities expanded exponentially. Over the course of the 1950s and 1960s, she established a leper colony, an orphanage, a nursing home, a family clinic and a string of mobile health clinics. In 1971, Mother Teresa traveled to New York City to open her first American-based house of charity, and in the summer of 1982, she secretly went to Beirut, Lebanon, where she crossed between Christian East Beirut and Muslim West Beirut to aid children of both faiths. In 1985, Mother Teresa returned to New York and spoke at the 40th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly. While there, she also opened Gift of Love, a home to care for those infected with HIV/AIDS.In 1979, Teresa received the Nobel Peace Prize “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace”.
On 13 March 1997 Teresa resigned as head of the Missionaries of Charity, and she died on 5 September.By then, the 13-member Calcutta congregation had grown to more than 4,000 sisters who managed orphanages, AIDS hospices and charity centers worldwide, caring for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine. By 2007, the Missionaries of Charity numbered about 450 brothers and 5,000 sisters worldwide, operating 600 missions, schools and shelters in 120 countries.
During her lifetime, Teresa was among the top 10 women in the annual Gallup’s most admired man and woman poll 18 times, finishing first several times in the 1980s and 1990s. In 1999 she headed Gallup’s List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century, out-polling all other volunteer answers by a wide margin, and was first in all major demographic categories except the very young. Mother Teresa was important, because she helped the poor even when she was the poor, she did not turn away from the helpless even if it meant risking her life. She was kind to all and had learned it from her mother, and father. She believed in her heart and had created a bright future for thousands, maybe even millions of people. She was selfless, and touched the heart of the people in our world.
