Most of the phone in the past is only a phone, which means it only had a function, which is calling. But when I phone came out, people start using a smartphone instead of the phone. Smartphone has more functions for people to use, like hearing music, watch videos, playing video games… There are too many functions, it already became a part of our lives, it is like we can’t survive without it. So it really makes a big change in all human lives.

    Author: Jess Brailer

Albert Einstein made his entrance into the world on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany. He only started speaking at 4 years old. Unlike other kids, he was always fascinated by gears, compasses and playing violin when he was small. His family went to Italy and left him to start high school in 1889. In general, nobody was allowed to ask questions but Einstein was always asking questions that teachers could not answer. The teachers thought that he had a bad influence on his classmates because of this situation. As a result, he was expelled from his high school. He went to Italy to reunite with his family after that.

In Italy, he did a lot of studies in other scientist’s lives and published his theories to newspapers. His first one was about electricity and magnetism. Because he wanted to become a Physics professor, and to accomplish his dream he re-entered a Switzerland college , and students were supposed to ask questions. He especially likes to discuss the subject of time with his teacher. After he graduated, he successfully got a job at the Patent office. When he had enough money and had confidence to pay the marrying fee, he married Mileva Maric. Even though he is married to Mileva, he doesn’t spend much time with her. He introduced the theory of relativity, and soon became a professor at the University of Zurich. He and Mileva soon divorced, for Mileva thought that he spent a lot more time on his studies than on her. Later that year, he waited to prove his theory of curving light and successfully proved it finally. A few years later, he married Elsa. He was a lot happier with her, as she had no problems with Albert studying and she took care of him. After a few years of hard work, he won the Nobel Prize for Physics. But then, in 1931, the Nazi war broke out, and he was declared a spy and put on a death warrant by Hilter, and they had to move to Princeton, New Jersey. A few years later, both his wifes died in 1936 and 1948 respectively. He was heartbroken. As his age increased, his heart and body weakened and he died on April 18, 1955.

Einstein was famous for his world-changing theories, such as the theory of relativity, and all his theories were proven right. They still stay today. His discoveries had made a lot of influence on plenty of inventions such as atomic bombs and solar cell power. His last request before he died was that he wants his brain donated to science. His brain is a bit different from average, but no one is sure what effects it had on his wisdom.

She learned how to ask for water by saying “wa-wa.”Then, when she was nineteen-months old, she got very sick. In modern times, most babies get vaccine shots against dangerous diseases. In 1880, these shots had not yet be created. It was common for kids to get sick, and they often die from diseases. The virus had made Helen sick gave her a high fever. She got so hot that for many days her forehead was too hot to touch. Finally, the fever broke, but Helen did not respond to noises and moves her parents made. She became deaf and blind. When Helen was older, her parents found a teacher to teach Helen, who is called Annie Sullivan, she taught her lots of stuff and changed her life. When she was seven years old, she became a miracle, even presidents wanted to meet her. As she grew up, her friendship with Anne Sullivan grew stronger. Helen simply called Anne “teacher”. As she become a teenager, she always keep herself busy by doing stuff, and love learning even more, she spent even more time studying and reading. She also developed and love of animals. She often travel with them. She also met the famous America author, Mark Twain, and become fast friends.

Helen had earned a lot of fame outside. She entered a school called Horace Mann School for the deaf. Teaching someone like Helen would be hard to do. But the principle of the school decided that she would try. Micheal Anagnos at the Perkins Institute kept writing stories for readers that were eager to hear more about the miracle girl that he told them Helen Keller was. Helen was not a child genius, and she could not do many of the things Mr.Anagnos wrote that she could. To the public, she was a legendary deaf-blind girl who seemed to have a special power for learning new talents. Helen was so well known that when she caught up in a scandal, it blew into big news. Micheal Anagos included that she wrote a story called the Frost King and was accused of copying the work the Frost Faries. By the time she was fourteen years old, she needed to attend a more advanced school. She entered Wright Humason school for the deaf in new york. Her goal was to speak in a total “normal” way so that anyone listening to her would not suspect that she was deaf. When it is about time to enter college, she applied for the all-girl Radcliffe college in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which was a top school like Haward University.

Her determination of learning and succeeding her goal even though she cannot see nor hear had made her famous. What she did for the society, for example helping the blind and the deaf, arguing that women should have the right to vote, affected the society. Today, deaf and blind students have a choice. They can attend special schools for deaf or blind, or they can attend normal schools. If the students cannot see, then the school must help the student to learn in ways that do not involve sight. Also, now schools have to be accessible to wheelchairs so that people who cannot walk can learn. Woman can now go to college and become whatever they want. (In Helen’s life, woman cannot always get into college or find a job.) It is important today, because, without it, woman might not have the freedom, and the disable might not be able to learn better. She also inspired me to not give up when doing something. I really admire her.

  19. Book: The Life of William Shakespeare: A Critical Biography
    Dear Queen Sandra,

Have you ever wondered what’s all about William Shakespeare’s life? Well, now I am about to tell you. First, off the bat, I will talk about William Shakespeare’s childhood. Now, I know what you are thinking, “Another boring biography, no thank you.” Wait, don’t go. I will try to make it better. Now I will start. William Shakespeare is a famous English poet and a playwriter.
William Shakespeare’s family and childhood, his father was a glover and leather-worker by trade. His mother was the daughter of Wilmcote gentleman farmer Robert Arden, a cadet of the Arden Family. William Shakespeare was born on about April 23, 1564. He was John and Mary Shakespeare’s oldest surviving child. Their first two children, both girls, did not live beyond infancy. William Shakespeare Growing up as the big brother of the family, William had three younger brothers, Gilbert, Richard, and Edmund, and two younger sisters: Anne, who died at seven, and Joan.
A few years after he left school, in late 1582, William Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway. She was already expecting their first-born child, Susanna, which was a fairly common situation at the time. When they married, Anne was 26 and William was 18. Anne grew up just outside Stratford in the village of Shottery. After marrying, she spent the rest of her life in Stratford. In early 1585, the couple had twins, Judith and Hamnet, completing the family. In the years ahead, Anne and the children lived in Stratford while Shakespeare worked in London, although we don’t know when he moved there.
Shakespeare prospered financially from his partnership in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men (later the King’s Men), as well as from his writing and acting. He invested much of his wealth in real-estate purchases in Stratford and bought the second-largest house in town, in 1597.
Among the last plays that Shakespeare worked on was Two Noble Kinsmen which he wrote with a frequent collaborator, John Fletcher, most likely in 1613. He died on April 23, 1616—the traditional date of his birthday, though his precise birthdate is unknown. We also do not know the cause of his death. His brother-in-law had died a week earlier, which could imply infectious disease, but Shakespeare’s health may have had a long decline.

She was born on 27 June 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, U.S. She died in her sleep on 1 June 1968 (aged 87) at her home in Arcan Ridge, Easton, U.S. When she was about one and half years old, she got sick with high fever. When she was six years old, her parents found her a teacher called Annie Sullivan. She was a nice teacher and taught Helen finger-spelled. Helen learned 900 words in one year. They worked together for 49 years.

At that time, few disabled people could go to college. But Helen did. She went to study in high school with Annie when she was fourteen years old. Then she went to study in Radcliffe College in Cambridge. Helen learned to ride horses, swimming and sledding. She also learned to read and write French, German and Latin. Helen had a keen sense of vibrations around her and could identify people and pets by their footsteps. Helen wrote 12 books and many articles on newspaper and magazines. In 1903, Helen was 23 years old, she was invited by the U.S. president to visit White House. She also worked to make braille the standard system of reading and writing for blind people. She traveled more than 40,000 miles across Asia to speak about fair treatment to disabled people. She spoke up not only for disabled people but also for children and the poor. She tried her best to help all other people in the whole of her life. She created miracle by herself.

I am inspired that Helen never gave up and stop learning, even she was blind and deaf. It is miracle that she learned how to speak. She respected life and realized that all people should have fair treatment. I should learn from Helen to be eager to learn and a helpful boy.

    Author: Jess Brailer

Albert Einstein made his entrance into the world on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, Germany. He only started speaking at 4 years old. Unlike other kids, he was always fascinated by gears, compasses and playing the violin when he was small. His family went to Italy and left him to start high school in 1889. In general, nobody was allowed to ask questions but Einstein was always asking questions that teachers could not answer. The teachers thought that he had a bad influence on his classmates because of this situation. As a result, he was expelled from high school. He went to Italy to reunite with his family after that.

In Italy, he did a lot of studies in other scientist’s lives and published his theories to newspapers. His first one was about electricity and magnetism. Because he wanted to become a Physics professor, and to accomplish his dream he re-entered a Switzerland college, and students were supposed to ask questions. He especially likes to discuss the subject of time with his teacher. After he graduated, he successfully got a job at the Patent office. When he had enough money and had the confidence to pay the marrying fee, he married Mileva Maric. Even though he is married to Mileva, he doesn’t spend much time with her. He introduced the theory of relativity and soon became a professor at the University of Zurich. But then, in 1931, the Nazi war broke out, and he has declared a spy and put on a death warrant by Hilter, and they had to move to Princeton, New Jersey.

Mandela studied law at the University of the Witwatersrand, and he was the only black African student there, so he faced racism. At Sisulu’s house, Mandela met Evelyn Mase, a trainee nurse from Engcobo, Transkei. They got married in October 1944.

Unfortunately, he was put in jail for 27 years because of opposing the government. The 27 years in Robben Island, Pollsmoor Prison, and Victor Verster Prison were terrible, Mandela had to break and collect stones from the mountain and carry them back to the prison, the things Mandela did in jail are all really harsh. It was 1990 when the president released him from jail.

Then later in 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected as the president of South Africa, and Mandela was the first black president in the country’s history. His election made a great change. For centuries, a white minority had ruled South Africa.

Mandela was later elected the first leader of a democratic South Africa in 1994, and he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his helping to end racial segregation in South Africa. People consider him to be “the father of a democratic South Africa” and widely admired him for his ability to bring together a nation. Nelson Mandela is one of the most admired political leaders of the 20th and 21th Century for his vision to forgive and forge a new ‘Rainbow’ nation.
I really admire Nelson Mandela, because he can stand up to what people feared.

Lady Gaga is an international iconic pop singer, songwriter, record producer, business woman and a successful actress. Her real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Since she was inspired by the Queen song “Radio Ga-Ga”, she decided to be known as Lady Gaga. She is an American. She was born on 28th of March, 1986 at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, New York City, to a catholic family. Her parents came from the lower- class families and worked hard for everything. At the age of 11, she attended Covent of Sacred heart school. During her childhood, she took a piano lessons and practiced a lot. The lessons taught her to create music by ear, which she preferred over reading sheet music.

Eventually, since her parents knew how good she was in music, they encouraged her to pursue music, and enrolled her in Creative Arts Camp. And when she was a teenager, she played at open mic night. By her age of 17, she had gained an early admission to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. When she studied there, she was sharpening her song writing skills, and composing essays and analytical papers on art, religion, social issues and politics. At her age of 19, Lady Gaga withdrew from her studies and moved out of her parents’ home in order to pursue her musical career.

During this time she started a band which began to gain local attention. Her first song, ‘Just dance’, became popular throughout the united states and Europe and eventually landed at number one on the Billboard Pop songs chart. Three other songs: “Poker Face”, “Love Game”, and “Paparazzi” also reached number one on the radio chart, making Lady Gaga, the first artist in the 17 year history of the chart to have the four number ones from her debut album. The fame was well received critically and proved enormously successful commercially, selling more than eight million copies worldwide by 2009.

Lady Gaga is still one of the legendary pop singer in history, and people are still admiring her songs including me and my family members. She is still important today, because she is an inspiring pop singer who brought new taste to the music world. She has treated music as art and she always sings her songs from her soul which have deeply touches people’s hearts. Lady Gaga does not only care about her career and money, but she also cares about other people like she has been supporting LGBTQ community and some other poor people in need. Therefore, after researching more about Lady Gaga, I am completely inspired by her and her hard-work.

    Early Life

Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, England. Her childhood was generally happy, although she does remember getting teased because of her name, “Rowling” – She recalls often getting called “Rowling pin” by her less than ingenious school friends. J.K.Rowling studied at St Michael’s Primary School in Gloucestershire, before moving to Chepstow, South Wales at the age of nine. From an early age, J.K. Rowling had the ambition to be a writer. She often tried her hand at writing, although little came from her early efforts.

She adopted her pen name, J.K., incorporating her grandmother’s name, Kathleen, for the latter initial (Rowling does not have a middle name). A graduate of the University of Exeter, Rowling moved to Portugal in 1990 to teach English. There, she met and married the Portuguese journalist Jorge Arantes. The couple’s daughter, Jessica, was born in 1993. After her marriage ended in divorce, Rowling moved to Edinburgh with her daughter to live near her younger sister, Di. While struggling to support her daughter Jessica and herself on welfare, Rowling worked on her first book in the Harry Potter series. The idea for the book reportedly occurred to her while she was traveling on a train from Manchester to London in 1990.

Her best-selling novels have sold more than 400 million copies and won numerous awards. The books have also been adapted to screen in a series of blockbuster films. Ranked as the twelfth richest woman in the United Kingdom in 2008 with a net worth of US$1 billion, Rowling has risen from rags to riches. Harry Potter upgraded the status of this woman from living on welfare to being a multimillionaire in a short period of just 5 years. Titled the Most Influential Woman in Britain in 2010 by leading magazine editors, J.K Rowling and Harry Potter have become household names globally.

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”
    -Mother Teresa-

This quote is from Mother Teresa and she’s the one that I am going to talk about. The book name is Mother Teresa.Mother Teresa, born on August 26 in 1910.Actually Mother Teresa’s real name is Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Mother Teresa (Agnes) first changed her name in 1929 to Sister Mary Teresa. She chose the name Teresa because her favorite saint was “Saint Teresa of Lisieux”. Mother Teresa then started teaching childrens and every day more children gathered for her lesson.

She joined the religious congregation. First she went to Dublin, a city in Ireland before she went to India. Soon she became a nun although her brother didn’t agree. She found the Dioceson Congregation “Missionaries of Charity” after she secured permission from the Vatican. She took care of all the people that are unwanted, unloved and uncared for throughout society. Mother Teresa lived a short life of discipline. She believes that aportion was the harsh deeds to do. She received a pretentious nobel prize in 1979 and more than a hundred other awards during her lifetime. She was also involved in internal charities from Beirut, America, Ethiopia and Operated over 500 missions in more than 100 countries. In 1997, there were more than 4500 nuns under Mother Teresa’s charity.

Mother Teresa became very famous because she helped the poorest of the poor and many people were touched because she was so kind-hearted and cared so much for people. Unfortunately in 1997 she died because she had a disease called “Heart failure”, poor Mother Teresa. After reading this book I want to try to be like her. Such as: helping others when they are needed and even more. I really appreciate Mother Teresa for taking care for the people in need. Actually many people, especially in India, have been and always remembered her excellent works towards the underprivileged. Nowadays, her spirit has inspired others to continue to care for others.

Thank you! Hope you liked it!!!

  37. Book: The Diary of a Young Girl Author: Anne Frank

The Diary of a Young Girl is a biography by Anne Frank, a thirteen-year-old Jewish girl. It is a captivating book because it keeps me reading what happened to Anne during World War II and how she felt during their little ‘flee’ in the attic in Amsterdam.

Anne was born in Frankfurt am Main in Germany in 1929, three years after her sister, Margot, was born. When Anne was four, their family moved to Holland to escape from Hitler’s horrible rule. Anne studied in Montessori School and had a lot of friends (and admirers too). Seeing what she wrote in her diary, her school life was quite interesting and funny that I could feel why she felt home in her school, just like many of us do too.

The most significant point in her life is probably the day when her sister, Margot, received a notice from the Central Office which called her to admit to a Jewish work camp. Since then, their family moved and hid in the Secret Annex, at which the door is covered by a bookcase. She then had to spend years living and hiding there, and talking to Kitty, her diary, and lived under the threat of being caught one day. Her life was not as fruitful as a lot of normal people. But I believed that what she went through made her grow up and built a positive mind for her. In her diary, she was always hoping for the day she could return school and have a happy life. Somehow writing the diary transformed her into a young diarist, that very passage keeps me curious to know more about her. However, when she was fifteen, the Nazis stormed into the Annex, and got Anne to the concentration camp. In the camp, they had to do a lot of labor work and were tortured since the food was scarce. Not before she was sixteen, she had already died because of the infection of typhus.

This diary made her famous as it reveals her life during Nazi invasion and reflects that this kind of rule should never ever exist any more. Her diary was a living proof of how horrible the Nazi rule was. This important house is now a tourist spot in Amsterdam, with very narrow stairs to climb up to the attic and experience the living environment of Anne. Anne was such an inspiration to people, and me of course, because she was so brave and optimistic amidst her tragic suppressed flee and hide in the Annex. In the beginning of the diary, you might think that she was just an ordinary girl, but at the end, you might not even believe that how this cute girl could go through all of this and become our inspiration.

  43. Dear Ms. Kum,
I used the book Who Is J.K.Rowling? to collect information for the blog below. The book is written by Pam Pollack and Meg Belviso.

Joanne Rowling (Jo for short), also known as J.K.Rowling, is an award winning author, and the most famous books of hers are the Harry Potter series. She was born at Yate General Hospital on 31st of July, 1965, in Gloucestershire, England. Two years after she was born, she had a sister named Diana. Jo was a girl with big imagination, and often make up stories to tell her sister. Other than telling stories, the sisters often played games together, or sometimes fought. Their fight made their mother very angry. When Jo was nine, the family moved to a small village called Tutshill, and Jo went to Tutshill Primary. The village has a huge forest, a long river, and an ancient castle on a cliff nearby. This gave Jo more ideas for her stories. When Jo was 11, she left Tutshill Primary and went to Wyedean Comprehensive School. She stood up to bullies, and told her friends stories at lunchtime. Jo was a lot like Harry’s brainy friend Hermione Granger in many ways. She got good grades at school, but in the inside, she was insecure.

When Jo was fifteen, her mother Anne caught a disease named multiple sclerosis (MS). Jo was heartbroken, and her friend Sean Harris cheered her up all the time. He was the inspiration of Ron Weasley, Sean’s car was the inspiration of the flying car, and her teacher Mrs. Morgan and Mr. Nettleship were the inspiration of Professor Snape. Jo attended the University of Exeter in 1983. She studied different languages, and this was how she came up with some of her character names, such as Voldemort and Malfoy. In 1987, Jo graduated from university. She moved to another town, and unfortunately, her mother died. One weekend when she took the train back to her homeland, she saw a boy when she looked out at the window, and thought of Harry Potter.

In 1992, Jo and a journalist named Jorge Arantes were married. Their baby girl Jessica was born in the next year, but unfortunately, Jo and Jorge divorced in the same year. After Jo finished Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, she sent it to an agent. She failed the first time, but in the second trial, the agent was happy and published the book. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was a big hit in both UK and US, and was even sold in an auction for at least $100,000. Many people loved the book, and schoolchildren voted her for the winner of the Smarties Book Prize. Years later, there was even a movie for the Harry Potter series. Jo wrote Quidditch Through the Ages and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for charities. She got married with Neil Murray in the same year, and gave birth to David in 2003 and Mackenzie in 2005. Jo’s family became millionaires. In July 2007, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the final book of the Harry Potter series was published. Jo donated money to charities that helps one-parent families, charities that find a cure for multiple sclerosis, and etc. In 2011, a website named Pottermore was created, where readers could participate in the Harry Potter story. Fans were blissful!

Joanne Rowling wrote the Harry Potter series, which made her really famous and rich. She created dreams for lots of children and teenagers. By reading this great series of novels, readers can be more imaginary and can learn more English, which is really important.

J.K.Rowling is an amazing author, and the Harry Potter series truly are wonderful books.

If we didn’t have telephones how would we communicate? After asking myself this question, I did some research on the internet and found this fabulous book by Natalie Brown called Who was Alexander Graham Bell?
Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3rd in 1847 to a family in Scotland. His mom was deaf, so he was always interested in how we hear sounds. One day, when he was young, he saw a talking machine at a fair and he was really curious about how it worked, and he knew he wanted to invent things connected with sound.
He did successfully make his own talking machine. He also became a teacher for deaf children and this interest helped Alexander later in his life. In 1874 he met another inventor Thomas Watson who helped him with his telephone. Together they wanted to make a device that allowed two people in different places to talk to each other. They made telephones that didn’t work many times, but they never gave up.
In March 1876, Alexander and Thomas were finally successful when the wires connecting the telephones came into contact with sulphuric acid. Alexander said “Mr. Watson – come here – I want to see you.” And Watson on the other side heard what he said. As we know now, the telephone would become one of the most important things in our lives.

His brother, Roy, got him a job at the Pesmen-Rubin Art Studio, where he met Ub Iwerks, a fellow cartoonist there, but, not even a year had passed once a sharp decline in revenue pushed Disney out of the work, the justification being “he lacked imagination”. So, Disney and Iwerks started their own business, named Iwerks-Disney commercial Artists.

Soon after, Disney and Iwerks made Mickey Mouse, believed to be inspired by Oswald the Lucky Rabbit which is also created by Disney in 1927. Mickey Mouse is a big hit during that time and Disney created several short films including the mischievous mouse. (Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse: The Firefighters, Mickey Mouse: The Band Concert, Mickey Mouse: Thru the Mirror…)Then, Disney had become dissatisfied with producing short films, and believed making a long film is possible. So, the studio began the four-year production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, based on the fairy tale in 1934. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs came out in 1937, being the first full length Hand-drawn animated feature film. After Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, there are also a lot of other hand-drawn animated movies made by Disney. Like Pinocchio, Dumbo, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty… Walt Disney’s last fully hand-drawn animated movie is believed to be The Sword in the Stone, before he sadly passed away on December 15, 1966. Walt Disney affected us all in some ways in our lives, and it is still very important today because it gives us inspirations, encourages, and most notably, it gives our black and white lives some colour.
“Fantasy, if it’s really convincing, can’t become dated, for the simple reason that it represents a flight into a dimension that lies beyond the reach of time.” -Walt Disney
